Is octave violin more common than I realized? Sounds like film soundtracks I assumed were cellos.

But apparently there was an instrument like this invented in the mid-1800s: https://www.rickertmusicalinstruments.com/2011/03/the-william-sidney-mount-historic-1852-cradle-of-harmony-violin.html. for more info you'd have to ask David Greenberg!
